this year marks a milestone in my
0:01
natural hair journey i've been natural
0:03
now for 10 years
0:06
[Applause]
0:08
but it's also a bit of a wake-up call
0:11
because i've realized
0:13
over 10 years i have not done that great
0:15
of a job of retaining length
0:17
i have a length that i'm happy with but
0:19
i also haven't been
0:21
working to keep that damp length if it
0:23
makes sense so i haven't been chasing
0:25
long hair i also haven't been
0:28
consistently cutting my hair to kind of
0:30
keep it at this length and i know my
0:32
hair grows because i have gray hairs and
0:34
i can see my great roots when they come
0:35
in
0:35
and i thought like when i started a
0:37
youtube channel it was going to be this
0:38
perfect thing how victorious i was with
0:40
natural hair
0:41
but i realized that sharing my onyx
0:43
experience even the
0:45
highs and the lows the successes and the
0:48
failures can help somebody
0:49
in their natural hair journey and
0:50
ultimately that's what i want to do
0:51
because i learned a lot
0:53
from the internet from forums from
0:56
youtube just about how to care for my
0:58
natural hair so
0:59
i just would like to be honest and share
1:01
my highs and lows
1:02
and here we go okay so these are the
1:06
four things that i'm going to switch up
1:07
in my natural hair care
1:08
routine this year to kind of see if i
1:10
can retain more length
1:12
so the first thing i'm going to do is
1:14
step away from the spray bottle
1:15
the notion that my hair needs to be wet
1:18
to be
1:19
moisturized i think have actually been
1:21
doing more
1:22
harm than good my water my tap water is
1:25
so
1:26
hard um i didn't realize how hard it was
1:29
until recently when i was
1:30
you know messing around with some
1:32
bathroom chemistry and
1:34
it's hard water that means it's alkaline
1:36
it means the ph
1:37
is high healthy hair has a lower ph
1:40
that's more acidic
1:41
so i think just spraying alkaline water
1:43
on my hair every day for the last like
1:45
five years since i moved into this house
1:47
probably has not been helping my hair at
1:50
all
1:50
so that's the first thing i'm going to
1:52
do is i'm putting the spray bottle down
1:54
if i need to like soften my hair to be
1:55
able to manipulate it you know like put
1:57
it up into a puff or maybe you know
1:59
change up styles i'm going to
2:00
reach for rose water and groceries
2:03
i'm going to reach for aloe vera juice
2:06
i'm going to reach for some curl
2:08
refresher sprays that already
2:09
pre-packaged or leave in conditioner i'm
2:11
not using
2:12
my tap water to wet my hair during the
2:14
week anymore so that's the first thing
2:16
that is getting tossed aside from 2021
2:21
so the next thing that i think has been
2:23
holding me back from
2:24
retaining length is a nighttime routine
2:28
i hate sleeping on satin pillowcases and
2:31
at the end of the day i'm tired so i
2:33
throw my jammies and hop in bed
2:34
um and like most of the time my hair is
2:36
just
2:38
and whatever style it was during the day
2:40
and typically i like to wear my hair up
2:42
in like high puffs
2:43
so that means i have these elastic bands
2:45
that are in my hair
2:47
it's probably not a huge deal but just
2:48
because the length of my hair
2:50
whether it's back or if it's up some
2:53
parts of the ends of my hair is
2:54
underneath that elastic and i would
2:57
literally leave that in for like a week
2:58
before i kind of like
3:00
to get down to refresh my hair or if i
3:02
was refreshing my hair
3:03
during the day and i only took it off
3:04
for like 30 seconds to
3:06
brush it all back up and put it back in
3:09
so
3:10
for this year 2021 see if i can retain
3:13
more length
3:14
i'm not sleeping in elastic bands um so
3:18
the elastic bands
3:19
the bobby pins all those things got to
3:21
come out of my hair before i go to bed
3:23
and i have went around the house
3:26
and gathered up all my satin scarfs that
3:28
i never used
3:29
um the scarves the bonnets i think i
3:31
like do-rag
3:32
so all the satin things that um i
3:35
haven't been using the way i should
3:37
i'm gonna make sure that i have
3:38
something satin on my hair when i go to
3:40
sleep at night
3:41
so that is the second thing i think has
3:43
been holding me back is just not
3:45
protecting my hair at night before i go
3:47
to sleep and sleeping with
3:49
uh elastic bands and clips in my hair
3:53
okay so the third thing i think has been
3:56
holding me back
3:57
from retaining length is lack of a
3:59
regular
4:00
routine um so i think about night time
4:03
routine but i'm just talking about like
4:04
a wash day routine
4:05
so before i would wash my hair probably
4:08
every two weeks it
4:09
really really wasn't consistent um so
4:12
this year i'm focusing on
4:13
consistent non-complex routines
4:17
for the last two or three months i've
4:18
been washing my hair every seven to ten
4:21
days like clockwork
4:22
um and i like it my scalp likes it i
4:24
thought dry flaky scalp in the
4:26
wintertime was unavoidable for me
4:28
but my my scalp has been so flake free
4:32
and moisturized and i think i really
4:36
attribute that to
4:37
washing my hair every seven to ten days
4:39
even when i was relaxed i think i would
4:41
get my hair washed at most
4:42
every two weeks but seven to ten days
4:44
just kind of increasing the amount
4:47
i uh just increasing the amount of wash
4:49
days i've been doing
4:50
i feel like i see improvement in my hair
4:53
um even detangling is easier because now
4:55
i'm doing it every seven to ten days
4:58
there's not as much difficulty in
5:00
detangling so my detangling sessions are
5:02
shorter
5:03
consistency over complexity i don't do a
5:06
deep conditioner every time
5:08
and i'm okay with that um so even if i
5:10
only got time to
5:11
leave conditioner on for three minutes
5:13
i've been finding that just making sure
5:15
i consistently wash my hair
5:17
has been helpful for me so that is the
5:19
third thing i'm changing up this year is
5:21
having consistent
5:23
wash day okay so the fourth thing that i
5:26
think has been holding me back
5:27
is
5:28
[Music]
5:31
i was trying to make a video about how
5:33
great henna was
5:34
and the universe kept stopping me like i
5:36
would lose my footage
5:38
um i would start recording and get
5:40
interrupted
5:41
and then i did a henna treatment and i
5:43
was like oh snap this
5:44
is messing up my hair i'm gonna have a
5:46
dedicated video on it
5:48
but there's this idea in the natural
5:51
hair community
5:52
at least from all of the content that
5:53
i've taken in that
5:55
as long as you buy 100 pure natural
5:58
henna that you
5:59
can't mess up your hair and that's not
6:01
true there is a science
6:03
and there is thousands of years of
6:05
tradition that dictate how you should
6:08
use henna
6:09
um i try to make henna convenient and
6:11
it's not convenient it's time consuming
6:12
and it's messy
6:13
um so when i tried to make henna
6:15
convenient i started jacking up
6:18
my hair that is one of the reasons i
6:20
haven't been recording videos lately
6:21
it's because i felt like
6:23
who am i to tell people what to do with
6:24
it here i've been handling my hair
6:27
for 10 years i throw out some guru on it
6:29
and um
6:31
the universe humbled me but i decided to
6:34
keep
6:35
going keep moving forward with my
6:36
channel because
6:38
we need more authentic content in the
6:39
natural hair community people need to
6:41
share their authentic experience
6:44
so again i'm gonna have a dedicated
6:45
video coming up on how
6:47
i started him apart properly i started
6:49
using him properly in the very beginning
6:51
and how i kind of started tweaking it
6:54
and tweaked it too much to the point
6:55
where it wasn't good for my hair anymore
6:57
and i spent a lot of time researching it
6:59
reaching out to companies
7:01
searching forums to figure out what i
7:03
did wrong
7:04
but yeah there's a right way and the
7:05
wrong way to use
7:07
even a hundred percent body odd quality
7:09
henna
7:10
and i will have a video on that um yeah
7:13
so drop a comment down below
7:15
on some of the things that you feel
7:16
might be keeping you from retaining life
7:18
or if you can relate
7:19
to anything i've shared in this video
7:21
again thanks for watching
